Episode 28 40 Wasted Days and Wasted Nights

In this slightly shorter than usual episode, I read from chapter 19 The Temptation, and Fast Of Forty Days from TW Doane's work Bible Myths and Their Parallels in Other Religions.  I also announce the winner of the cover art for the contest I'm planning on launching later on this month.  Its Steve at Hudson Media from Columbus, OH.  You can see his entry below.

I blather on a bit in the podcast about how Doane admits that there's a significance to the number 40, which is common in a considerable number of religions, but gives no explanation as to why that might be.  I think that I might have figured it out.  Forty is double the number of fingers and toes a human being has, so in societies where numeracy is limited, this would seem to be a very large number, and would be something common in all societies.  The speculation about Venus that I talk about in the podcast is likely to have come later, once societies had become literate, I think.  I'll blather more about it in the next episode.

I'd also like to give a big shout out to Tom and Cecil over at the Cognitive Dissonance Podcast for playing my voicemail.  They rock, and for anyone who found me thanks to them, I want to thank you for listening, and apologize in advance for not being the least bit funny.

Episode 0025: Doctor Doctor, Was Jebus King of the Jews?

This episode features my interview with Dr. Robert M. Price of the Bible Geek Podcast and the Human Bible Podcast.  The audio quality isn't great because we had to do it over the phone, but its not so horrible that you can't understand everything.  It runs a bit longer than usual.  You can listen to the episode here.

A short episode this week, because I'm a bit rusty at doing a news episode.  I'm holding a contest to develop iTunes cover art for a new podcast I'm planning on launching next month called "Bootstrapping the Planet."  Artwork needs to be 1400x1400 pixels, and ideally in .PNG or .JPG format.  Winner gets a dead tree edition of Doane's "Bible Myths and Their Parallels in Other Religions."  Send your entry to me at my email address.  Next episode should feature my interview with Dr. Price.

Episode 14: Who Wrote the Old Testament, Part Two

Professor Fuzznuts assisting with the editing of the episode.

I'll be the first to admit that this episode is a bitch to get through in spots.  (You can listen to it here.)  It is actually kind of important when you're trying to understand Biblical history and how the myths came to be.  Respected scholar Irving Finkel, in January of this year, talking about the discovery of  the oldest account of the Flood myth.  Finkel's book about the discovery The Ark Before Noah, which is well worth a listen.  Finkel's book on ancient board games.

Plum ketchup recipe I mentioned in the episode.  Here's the BBQ sauce recipe I mentioned.  In addition to the use of corn starch, the other variation I used was Smoked Chipotle Tabasco sauce.

A bit of a bonus episode this week!  Its chapters 9 and 10 of Bible Myths and Their Parallels in Other Religions by TW Doane.  Chapter 9 details Jonah and the whale, and how Jonah was most likely a sun god, while chapter 10 discusses circumcision in Judaism and other societies.  The Tale of Little Golden Hood, another sun god (or in this case, goddess) myth.  Man of Steel, Woman of Kleenex

Episode 0010 Samson, The Pimpin' Sun God

The episode can be found here.

Things mentioned in the show:

Salome's Last Dance, a film by Ken Russell, available for streaming on Amazon.com

The constellation Hydra.

Cecil B. DeMille's classic film Samson and Delilah, available from Amazon streaming.  It makes more sense than the Biblical account, and young Angela Landsbury is surprisingly hot, I must say.  Even better looking than the ravishing Hedy Lamarr (who plays her younger sister, despite being older than her).
