Episode 0077: Men Without Heads!

This episode is part two of the chapter "Why Christianity Prospered" from Bible Myths and Their Parallels in Other Religions by TW Doane.  In this chapter we learn about a Buddhist prophecy from 600 BCE which could be used to predict the birth of Jebus, as well as the birth of Joseph Smith!!!!  (Actually, however, you'll see that the prophecy could be used to predict any number of religious nutters, and has really no meaning at all.)  Doane lays out the case that the Essenes (who were known by a number of different names in ancient times) were Buddhists who later became Christians because they had a prophecy which "predicted" the appearance of Jebus.  Doane discusses other contenders for the throne of 1st Messiah, and then proceeds to quote various church fathers who happily admitted to lying if they thought it would help spread the gospel.  One of them St. Augustine even claimed to have preached a sermon to a race of people who had no heads!

There will be a part 3 to this chapter, if not a part 4, and I apologize for the sound quality of the episode, but as I explain in the beginning of the podcast there were some problems with setting up my new PC.  Now for the links related to things talked about on this episode:

The Burned Over district of New York, a place which has given birth to a number of American religions.

Montanism.  No, it doesn't have anything to do with the worship of Hannah Montana.

Socrates of Constantinople

Terebinthus, one of the many folks who claimed to be the Messiah.

Catholic site claiming the "men without heads" sermon is a forgery.

Episode 76: Shelley Segal is Still Cooler Than You!

Protect yourself online, especially if you're in a country hostile to atheism, check out https://www.privacytools.io/ for more information!

This is part two of my interview with singer/songwriter Shelley Segal.  Its a bit shorter than usual, because I'm having computer problems and as soon as this episode gets posted, I'm going to have to tear this machine down and rebuild it.  Hopefully, I'll have it done before I have to record the next episode.

Another artist who's music is similar to Shelley's that I forgot to mention is Mila Jovovich.  Yes, that Mila Jovovich.  The subject matter isn't sceptical, but if you like Shelley's music, you'll probably also like Mila's.

Episode 0074: Shelley Segal is Cooler Than You

This episode has part 1 of my interview with Shelley Segal.  I hadn't planned on making it a two-parter, but with the recent attack in Paris, I felt I should devote a portion of the podcast to discussing that, and a few other things which had cropped up in the days since I interviewed Shelley.  All of this means that there's a rough edit out of the interview.  Depending upon how long the chapter of Bible Myths is next week, I may post the rest of the interview then, or I may do it the following week.

Episode 72: Ghost Hunters Gone Stupid

Okay, I'll try to get the show notes written, if Fuzznuts will let me.  He's demanding to be held as I write this, and one handed typing is not my forte.

Special Wheezing Episode!

I'm still too sick to record an episode, so what I've done is taken two episodes of my other podcast Bootstrapping the Planet, stuck them both together to make something that's about an hour long and will give folks at least something to listen to until I'm better.  I do believe that I will be up to recording an episode next week, as I'm feeling much better, sooner than I expected.

Show notes for the two episodes in this podcast can be found here: http://bootstrappingtheplanet.blogspot.com/2015/05/episode-0004-bonus-episode.html

This episode is a bit heavy on the politics, I admit, but I do manage to touch on a number of non-political things.

Episode 0069: Christianity Rips Off Paganism Part 2

If you live in a part of the world where you're concerned about people spying on your internet activities, I urge you to check out the website https://www.privacytools.io/

Its episode 69 and I didn't even make any jokes about the number in the podcast, getting soft in my old age, I guess.  This episode is part two of the chapter Paganism in Christianity from TW Doane's Bible Myths and Their Parallels in Other Religions.  Deads tree editions of the book are available here:  http://amzn.to/1gr5pwK

This episode is a bit shorter than normal, but I think that with the way things are going, this chapter is going to be at least a 4 parter, if not a 5 parter.  And if you think that's rough, remember, it's taking me about 4 hours to edit each of these episodes, and I have to listen to them over and over while I'm doing it.

I couldn't find anything on the Church of St. Martins that Doane mentions, but I did find things on the other churches which were built from former pagan temples.

Temple of Apollo, now the Basilica of Saint Apollinare

The Pantheon, originally dedicated to Jupiter.

The Church of Reparata, former pagan temple.

Episode 0062: My Interview With Callie Wright

This week I interview the lovely and charming Callie Wright from the Gaytheist Manifesto podcast.  We talked about some of the issues facing those in the trans community, such as the high rate of suicide, discrimination, and the struggle for recognition.  I also got Callie to open up about something that's very important to her, that she's never talked about on a podcast before.

I also want to update folks on what's been happening with Beth from The Beyond the Trailer Park Podcast.  She's doing better, and her GoFundMe campaign has nearly reached the halfway point.  If you'd like to donate to help her in this time of need, you can donate here.

Episode 0061: Christian Symbols

Okay, normally I say you don't need to listen to previous episodes, but since this chapter was started in this episode, which itself was a continuation of this episode, you might want to go back and listen to those episodes before listening to this one.

Episode 59: The Mary with the Cherry, Part 2

This episode covers the second half of chapter 32 of Bible Myths and Their Parallels in Other Religions by TW Doane, as well as the first half of chapter 33.  Chapter 32 talks about the various Mary-like figures in other religions, while chapter 33 covers Christian symbols, such as the cross, which can be found in religions that pre-date Christianity.
